The Santos de Cartier was the first Cartier in the collection. I got it in July 2023. When Cartier announced the return of the Roadster back in April 2026, I was hooked.
Few watches in Cartier's modern history have divided opinion quite like the Roadster. When it was first introduced in 2002, it represented a bold departure from the brand's established icons such as the Tank and Santos. Its sweeping tonneau-shaped case, integrated bracelet and automotive-inspired details gave it a personality unlike any other Cartier. For years, it remained one of the most underrated watches in the brand's catalogue.
Personally, the Roadster ticked all the boxes that appeals to me. Unique, refined - yet masculine at the same time is a recipe to becoming an icon.
When I was in Japan (see the blog posting about the watch I got during that trip) in July 2026, I happened to come across a Cartier boutique. I entered and asked them when will the Roadster be available. The answer than was tentatively September 2026. Back to the present, when I visited a Cartier boutique in Kuala Lumpur in early October 2026, units had already been delivered but earmarked to buyers already. I quickly put my name via the same dealer I bought my Santos de Cartier earlier.
The day I was supposed to get the watch was the day I buried my dad. It was a devastating day as seven months ago in March, I did the same for my mom. This watch will have a bittersweet memory for me.
A Design That Stands Apart
Today, the Roadster has returned, and its reintroduction in 2026 confirms what many enthusiasts have long suspected: the Roadster was simply ahead of its time. According to Cartier, the new Roadster marks the return of a collection that has become a "watchmaking benchmark among connoisseurs" since its original launch. As at the publication of this posting, there are seven models to choose from. These can be further broken down to between sizes:large or medium models; and materials: stainless steel, stainless steel & yellow gold mix, or pure yellow gold. Below are the models currently in the catalogue.

I suspect like the Santos de Cartier, other dial colours will be offered in the future. Future models under this line will fill the gaps. |

In an era when many luxury sports watches seem to follow a familiar formula, the Roadster remains refreshingly different. The design draws inspiration from classic sports cars, incorporating elements reminiscent of speedometers, aircraft fuselages and automotive instrumentation. The result is a watch that feels dynamic even when sitting still.
The defining feature remains the flowing tonneau-shaped case. Unlike the angular Santos or the architectural Tank, the Roadster embraces curves from every angle. The watch appears sculpted rather than engineered, with an organic form that transitions seamlessly into the bracelet. Equally distinctive is the magnified date aperture positioned at three o'clock. Designed to evoke the headlamp of a vintage automobile, it has become one of the most recognisable details in contemporary Cartier watchmaking. Cartier specifically highlights the speedometer-inspired dial, headlight-shaped date magnifier and streamlined design as central elements of the Roadster's identity.
The Watch
Among the current collection, the Blue Dial Large Model is arguably the most compelling expression of the Roadster concept. While Cartier's silver dials remain timeless, the deep navy blue dial enhances the sporting character of the watch without sacrificing elegance.
Among the current collection, the Blue Dial Large Model is arguably the most compelling expression of the Roadster concept. While Cartier's silver dials remain timeless, the deep navy blue dial enhances the sporting character of the watch without sacrificing elegance.
Unlike the previous 2002 iteration, the dial on the 2026 Roadster is not only painted but embossed to create actual texture and depth. Below is a stock photo of a white dial Roadster minus the casing and crystal which clearly show the texturing on the dial (the blue dial also got the same treatment).
The dial retains all the classic Cartier signatures. Large Roman numerals anchor the display, while the familiar sword-shaped hands sweep gracefully across the dial. The blue surface introduces greater visual drama, changing character depending on the lighting conditions. Under direct sunlight, it appears vibrant and energetic. Indoors, it deepens into a rich navy hue that complements the steel case beautifully.

What makes the dial successful is that it remains unmistakably Cartier despite adopting a more contemporary colour palette. The watch never loses the refinement associated with the brand.
Dimensions and Everyday Practicality
One of the most impressive aspects of the latest Roadster is how carefully Cartier has balanced presence and wearability. The new Large Model measures 47.2 mm by 38.8 mm with a thickness of only 10.06 mm. Despite these dimensions, the curved case profile allows it to sit comfortably and naturally on the wrist. The case is crafted entirely from stainless steel and is fitted with a sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated to 100 meters, making it a genuinely versatile everyday luxury watch rather than merely a design piece.

The proportions feel remarkably modern. There is enough wrist presence to satisfy contemporary tastes, yet the watch avoids the excessive bulk associated with many modern sports watches. The relatively slim case also contributes to a sense of elegance that has always distinguished Cartier from its competitors.
A Modern Cartier Movement
Powering the latest Roadster Large Model is Cartier's in-house automatic Calibre 1847 MC. This self-winding movement has become one of the company's cornerstone mechanisms and is now used across several key collections. According to Cartier, the 1847 MC powers the Large Model Roadster and serves as part of the technical foundation for the collection's revival.

While movement specifications rarely define a Cartier, the use of the 1847 MC reinforces the Roadster's transition from an interesting design exercise into a fully modern luxury sports watch. Reliability, practicality and serviceability remain the priorities, aligning perfectly with the Roadster's role as an everyday companion.
As you can see in the photo above, the case-back is curved and locked in place using six screws.
The Bracelet and QuickSwitch System
One of the most welcome updates is Cartier's continued implementation of its QuickSwitch system. This allows a very easy process of replacing straps and bracelet without the need of a tool. Unfortunately, the SmartLink system was not made available (see my Cartier Santos posting). For me, this is even more essential as it allows one to adjust the length of the bracelet without a tool since the bracelet does not come with any micro-adjustment design built into the clasp.

For me, this is even more essential as it allows one to adjust the length of the bracelet without a tool since the bracelet does not come with any micro-adjustment design built into the clasp.
The new Roadster is supplied with a stainless steel bracelet as well as an additional navy blue rubber strap. Both can be exchanged quickly without tools, allowing owners to transform the character of the watch within seconds.
This is the only model under the current series that does not come with a leather strap.

On the bracelet, the Roadster feels purposeful and sporty. On the rubber strap, it immediately becomes more refined and dress-oriented. This versatility has become increasingly important in today's market, where collectors often seek a single watch capable of adapting to multiple occasions.

The bracelet itself deserves particular praise. Its integrated design was remarkably forward-thinking when first introduced and feels even more relevant today. Long before integrated-bracelet sports watches became the dominant trend, Cartier had already mastered the concept with the Roadster.
Luminescence
One area where the new Roadster differs from many contemporary sports watches is its restrained approach to luminescence. Rather than heavily coating the dial and hands with luminous material, Cartier has chosen a more elegant solution. The blued steel sword hands as well as the hour markers and Roman numerals are filled with blue Super-LumiNova®, providing sufficient visibility in low-light conditions while preserving the refinement of the dial during daylight hours. Although the official specification mentioned blue luminous paint, visually, it looks green to me. What do you think?
In darkness, the luminous hands emit a crisp glow that makes it easy to read the time at a glance. The effect is subtle rather than dramatic, reflecting the Roadster's position as a luxury sports watch rather than a dedicated tool watch. There is a certain charm to this approach. The watch does not attempt to mimic a professional diver with an intensely illuminated dial. Instead, it delivers just enough nighttime legibility while maintaining the elegance and sophistication that are central to the Roadster's character. Even in low light, the distinctive shape of the hands and the unique architecture of the dial remain unmistakably Cartier.
Do note that the blue dial version is only model under the current series that has its Roman numerals painted with Super-LumiNova® paint.
Why the Roadster Makes Sense in 2026
The timing of the Roadster's return feels particularly appropriate. Collectors today are increasingly drawn to watches with strong identities rather than those that simply follow trends. The Roadster possesses an originality that many modern designs struggle to achieve.
It combines elements currently in demand, including an integrated bracelet, an everyday sports-luxury profile, versatile sizing and a strong design narrative. Yet unlike many contemporary offerings, it does not rely on comparisons to another watch. The Roadster stands entirely on its own.
What looked unconventional in 2002 now appears remarkably prescient. The qualities that once made the Roadster an outlier have become the very reasons enthusiasts are rediscovering it today.
The Buying Experience
The Cartier representative that I bought my Santos at the Gardens Mall has moved to Pavilion Bukit Bintang. I called her to ask about getting the watch. She said the first batch that the boutique received have already been allocated. I would need to wait for the next batch. Happily, the second batched came earlier than expected and she called me to ask whether I am interested. I quickly said yes.
A day before my appointment to see her and get the watch was the day my dad passed away. It was overwhelming and I had to postponed the appointment to settle my dad funeral arrangements. Eventually I got the time to go to the boutique.
The buying experience was first class and I truly enjoyed it. After getting coffee, juices and chocolates, the dealer also gave me a couple of branded gifts. The first is a series of perfume from the brand (see below).
The second was a soft travelling pouch.
The most useful would have to be the travelling pouch. The only comment I have is that it should be a hard case and not a soft pouch. If the watch is paired with the bracelet, a soft pouch will not protect the metal surfaces from banging into each other as the pouch get pressed from the outside.
The Wearing Experience
While the specifications tell part of the story, the Roadster's greatest strength only becomes apparent once it is worn. Despite measuring 47.2 mm by 38.8 mm, the watch wears considerably smaller than the numbers suggest. The tonneau-shaped case follows the natural contour of the wrist, and the integrated bracelet creates a seamless transition from case to bracelet. As a result, the watch feels balanced and secure, with none of the top-heavy sensation often associated with modern sports watches. The relatively slim 10.06 mm profile also allows it to slip comfortably under a shirt cuff, something that cannot be said of many contemporary luxury sports watches. Cartier's emphasis on the Roadster's streamlined design is evident the moment it is placed on the wrist.
What is particularly impressive is the versatility of the wearing experience. On the steel bracelet, the Roadster feels purposeful and sporty, with enough visual presence to stand out without being ostentatious. The polished surfaces catch the light beautifully, while the flowing case design softens what could otherwise have been a substantial watch. Switching to the navy blue rubber strap transforms the watch entirely. It becomes more sporty and refined, almost taking on the character of a contemporary dress watch. This ability to transition effortlessly between casual and formal settings is a hallmark of successful Cartier designs, and the Roadster achieves it with remarkable ease.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect is how distinctive the watch feels on the wrist. In a market dominated by familiar round sports watches, the Roadster offers a completely different experience. The curved crystal, the prominent crown assembly and the signature date magnifier create a watch that is instantly recognisable to the wearer as well as to those around them. Yet despite its uniqueness, it never feels eccentric or difficult to wear. Instead, it possesses the effortless comfort and elegance that have long defined the best creations from Cartier. It is a watch that quickly disappears on the wrist from a comfort perspective, while remaining constantly present from an aesthetic one.
Below are videos of the watch using the bracelet as well as the rubber strap.
Final Thoughts
The relaunched Roadster Large Model demonstrates that great designs do not age; they simply wait for the market to catch up. More than two decades after its debut, the Roadster feels just as distinctive as ever, but now benefits from modern execution, an in-house automatic calibre and Cartier's latest bracelet technology.
For collectors seeking something beyond the usual luxury sports-watch narrative, the blue dial Roadster offers a refreshing alternative. It is elegant without being formal, sporty without being aggressive and unmistakably Cartier from every angle. In a market filled with familiar choices, that individuality may be its greatest strength.
