While browsing in one of my favorite watch shop, I happened to stumble upon a desk clock from Seiko made in collaboration with Coca-Cola. On further investigation, I found that that Seiko and Coca-Cola teamed up together in 2017 to create a series of timepieces to celebrate to two great brands. It would seem that the two companies had a similar history. At exactly the same time as Kintaro Hattori was planning to open his Seikosha factory and to create his first ever wall clock, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia created a drink that would soon sweep the world.
Celebrating the history of the two parties, the clock series comprised of wall and alarm clocks, which all display a distinct retro styling. Coke’s iconic glass bottle and classic red, white and black color scheme serve as the visual elements while Seiko’s precision timing module serve as the engine of the clocks.
What I saw in the shop is the Seiko Coca-Cola Desk Clock with reference number QHL901R. It is a limited edition desk clock with only 5,000 examples available worldwide. It was priced at RM100.00 from AWG, Mid Valley Megamall. Think this price was a steal in my opinion.
This desk clock is not that big. The clock itself is just 10.4 cm wide by 4.5 cm tall with a depth of 2.9 cm. With the addition of the metal stand, the measurement changes with the height going up to 9.3 cm tall and the depth going to 4.5 cm (the width remain the same).
Made out of red plastic, it has a large LCD screen that shows the time in digital format. The LCD screen can also be lighted by pressing the large rectangular button on top of the clock. It is powered by two AA batteries as well as direct electricity feed (the plug-in wire for this style of charging is not provided, only the batteries were part of the package).
I got the unit with the serial number 3464/5000. The serial number is painted on a golden steel plate with diamond patterns and the Coca-Cola logo as well as the words "COKE" on it. From the photo above, you can see some of the basic controls to adjust the functions of the watch.
Apart from the clock, the clock also has an alarm function which is controlled by the on/off switch. The alarm function has an automatic stop mechanism (after 5 minutes) as well as a snooze function. Apart from that, it has a light, a calendar, a stop watch and count down timer as well.
Below is with the internal light switched on.
Conclusion
This is a cute novelty timepiece that can create a smile when you see it. I like desk toys and this is one that will have a place on my office table.
