Head-To-Head: Seiko 62MAS remake SBDC053 versus Seiko 6159-7001 remake SBDC061

During Baselword 2017 and Baselword 2018, Seiko decided to present a series of re-interpretation of their famous dive watch icons, the 62MAS and 6159-7001, respectively. Using the latest manufacturing technologies, materials and movements, Seiko was able to offer new iconic styled watches to fans. This strategy has been well received by Seikonistas all over the globe (<L> is the SBDC053; <R> is the SBDC061 - please click the photos below for the links to the written reviews).

Both models are under the Prospex series. Below are some of the major specifications for both watches.

The SBDC061 is generally bigger compared to the SBDC053 except for thickness. Even if the SBDC061 comes with a similar silicone strap, the weight would still be more than the SBDC053.

Both uses the same Lumibrite luminous compound manufactured by Seiko. However, the choice of the shape of the hour markers does make a difference in the intensity. The circular markers of the SBDC061 appears to concentrate more luminosity compared to the triangular markers on the SBDC053.

Below are two videos of these watches on my wrist. I have a 7.25 inch circumference wrist. The SBDC053 wears better on my wrist. There is less wrist 'overhang' compared to the SBDC061.

I am also more attracted to the the crown location on the SBDC053. To me, a crown at any four corners of the compass is more symmetrically pleasing. Placing it at any other points on the watch makes it asymmetrical when we compared it to the lugs. From a visual point of view, the lugs are a major structural focal points to a watch.

If given a choice between the two, get the SBDC053 instead.

  1. I briefly owned an SBDC051 on bracelet, and found it a tad too big for my 7" wrists. Gorgeous watch and well constructed watch, but just too much for my puny wrists.
